Placer awards $3.3M contract for road maintenance, approves $7.3M in road projects from gas funding
The Placer County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday awarded a $3.3 million road maintenance contract to repair, strengthen and protect approximately 9.9 miles of county roads in Granite Bay and North Lake Tahoe.
The board unanimously awarded the contract to Teichert Construction of Roseville, the lowest-price qualified bidder.
The contract includes an $800,000 road resurfacing project for East Roseville Parkway in the Treelake Village neighborhood in Granite Bay and $2.5 million for various west shore roads in North Lake Tahoe. A map of the roads designated for overlay treatment is available here.
Work is expected to begin in June and last for approximately 35 days.
Road surfacing overlays are a maintenance option used to extend the useful life of roadway pavement. The overlays reduce the rate of deterioration, correct surface deficiencies, reduce permeability and make for smoother driving.
The board also adopted a resolution approving a road maintenance project list for next year required to receive funding from California’s new gas tax and vehicle fee increases.
Placer expects to receive $7.3 million in the 2018-2019 fiscal year from the state’s Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account, created through Senate Bill 1 passed by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in April last year.
In a presentation to the board, county staff noted that gas tax revenue slated to fund the Tahoe roads project this year may be less than forecast, but any roads that could not completed would be at the top of the list next year if the county cannot do them this summer.
The project list includes:
- An estimated $4.5 in road surfacing throughout Placer County, depending on available gas tax revenue
- Road surface treatment for 75 miles of county roads in western Placer County
- Installation of various storm water quality and pavement improvement features as part of the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project
- Penryn Road culvert replacement project
- Removal and replacement of non-compliant curb ramps in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
- Tree trimming and vegetation management at various locations in Placer County
- Drainage improvements for East Conifer Drive in Truckee
Funding from fuel tax revenue is designed to address road maintenance, rehabilitation and critical safety needs on both state highways and local streets.
