Providing Improved Access to Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Resources and the Lake Tahoe Prescribed Fire Map
New Year, New Tahoe Living With Fire Website to improve the user experience and information accessibility.
Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension collaboratively redesigned and updated the Tahoe Living With Fire website to improve the user experience and information accessibility. Tahoe RCD and Cooperative Extension worked with local design company, SDBX Studio, to reinvent the website to provide clear and concise wildland fire prevention and preparedness information specific to Lake Tahoe. “The Tahoe Living With Fire website update was a collaborative effort among partners of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team,” said Jamie Roice Gomes, outreach coordinator and manager at the Cooperative Extension. “At the beginning of the process the need for mobile-friendly, easily digestible information in quick and concise points was recognized and strategies were implemented to make the website meet those needs.”
The site includes Tahoe-specific information on:
- Preparing your home for wildfire
- Creating defensible space
- Establishing an evacuation plan
- Reducing ember vulnerabilities on structures
- Local fire district services & contact information
- Prescribed fire operations
- Understanding fire
- Fire prevention
A particularly useful feature of the new site is an updated version of the Lake Tahoe Prescribed Fire Map. The interactive map identifies current prescribed fires in the Lake Tahoe area and the responsible agency, contact information, type of burn, acreage, and anticipated smoke impacts for each. About the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team
The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) consists of representatives of Tahoe Basin fire agencies, CAL FIRE, Nevada Division of Forestry and related state agencies, University of California and Nevada Cooperative Extensions, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, conservation districts from both states, the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board.
