Responding to community feedback, Placer County updates short-term rental program
For Immediate Release: April 13, 2021
AUBURN, Calif. – Responding to community feedback, the Placer County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to update the county’s current short-term rental ordinance.
Updates to the program include redefining the program boundaries to match the eastern Placer transient occupancy tax collection area; clarifications to rental restrictions during construction; adding information regarding bear boxes, fire safety enhancements and program streamlining.
“Since the program’s inception, we have been listening to local stakeholders and residents to learn how we can improve the program in a way that benefits our community at large,” said District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson. “These updates reflect not only program feedback, but also a larger effort by the county to address key issues affecting our region.”
Placer’s short-term rental program was approved by the board in November 2019 with the intention to strike a balance of reducing neighborhood nuisances like noise and parking issues related to vacation rentals without undermining the market for this important guest accommodation.
Challenges to outdoor destinations across the country have been on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Placer County has been working on short-term and long-term solutions, while coordinating with local agencies, organizations and community members to discuss strategies and implement solutions.
These solution-driven conversations have been brought directly to the community through town halls, focus groups and formal mediation processes implemented through Zephyr Collaboration, a third-party facilitation consultant. This program update is one of the many examples of actions taken that directly result from the feedback received during these discussions.
With today’s approval of the second reading of the ordinance amendment, it will go into effect 30 days from approval.
