August 4, 2016 Update
Core of the Core Phase
Q & D Construction has completed the bulk of their contract items related to this phase of the project and is currently completing punch list items, including landscape maintenance and replacement, street light repairs and repair of damaged improvements.
Gateway to the Core Phase
Disney Construction is extending improvements on both ends of Kings Beach along Highway 28 and completing some street improvements in the grid. Below is a summary of upcoming work activities:
At the west end of the project, night work for grading and construction of curbs, gutters and sidewalks on the north side of the intersection of highways 28 and 267 will continue for the next two or three weeks. This work is being performed Sunday through Thursday nights, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. in an effort to minimize impacts to traffic and pedestrians during the daytime. Temporary traffic control measures will be in place during the work shift, and CHP will be onsite during nighttime operations. During the fourth week of August, work activities will shift to the south side of state Route 28, where curb, gutter and sidewalk work will be performed during the daytime, between 7am-5pm.
At the east end of the project, lanes have been temporarily striped to shift traffic to the north, for curb, gutter and sidewalk work on the south side of state Route 28. Signage is in place for a temporary pedestrian detour between lower Chipmunk and Stevenson’s Holliday Inn, guiding pedestrians to use Brockway Vista and avoid construction activities for this area along the highway. Daytime underground storm drain work continues advancing from south to north, just west of lower Chipmunk, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Next week, when this underground work will advance a bit farther to the north across 28, temporary traffic control measures will be used during each work shift to temporarily shift traffic around the work area as the underground storm drain is constructed across the highway. Steel plates will cover in progress work in the roadway between shifts.
Underground storm drain work, utility relocations and curb, gutter and permeable concrete work will begin later this week on Chipmunk between 28 and Minnow, and continue for about 8 weeks. During this time, portions of Chipmunk may be subject to one-way flagged traffic controls or completely closed, depending on the operation. Detours will be fully signed and will guide traffic around the work zone via Fox and Minnow streets.
On Wednesday, August 10th, the contractor will be performing paving grinding on Dolly Varden street. One-way flagged traffic controls will guide traffic around the work zone.
Overlay paving on Dolly Varden Street will be performed between Monday, Aug. 15 and Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Both paving and grinding are moving operations, so equipment won’t be sitting in one single area for an extended length of time.
Work Zone Safety
We have observed pedestrians and bicyclists cutting through the construction zone. We are implementing temporary pedestrian detours at the east end of town between the laundromat and lower Chipmunk Street. This detour will divert pedestrians and bicyclists around the work area by using Brockway Vista East and the Stevenson’s Holliday Inn to safely bypass the work zone. A big thanks goes out to the Stevenson’s Holliday Inn for allowing folks to pass through their property to get back to the completed sidewalks next to the Char Pit.
Open for Business
Although construction areas are often congested and confusing to negotiate, we do want to remind folks that all businesses along the strip are open for business. Parking is available along the highway, on county roads, or within the newly constructed parking lots. Please be patient with construction workers, and they will assist you in accessing what you need.
